Welcome on the catalog of the Arabic Manuscripts Institute!

The Institute of Arabic Manuscripts was founded in 1946 as a department of the Cultural Administration at the General Secretariat of the Arab League in Tahrir Square, then later attached to the Palace of Prince Fouad on al-Bustan Street. One year after its establishment (1947), the Institute was renamed “Institute for Manuscript Revival”. The purpose of establishing the Institute was several-fold, including:

  • Researching the locations of manuscripts around the world.
  • Photographing manuscript treasures and making them accessible to researchers and scholars.
  • Cataloging manuscripts in public and private libraries, and publishing these catalogs.
  • Serving as a scientific center for scholars and researchers in search of manuscripts.
  • Promoting Arab heritage and its value.
  • Publishing the most important research works scientifically.

AlKindi: The written heritage of the Muslim worlds

Abū Yūsuf Yaʿqūb ibn Isḥāq al-Kindī, who passed away in 866, played a pivotal role as a transmittor. He effectively transmitted Greek philosophy to the emerging Islamic culture by orchestrating collaborations with Syriac monk-translators, which facilitated the development of a scientific vocabulary in the Islamic world.
